BHOs: Wax weed, budder weed, and more

Butane hash oils (BHOs) like marijuana wax and budder weed are cannabis concentrates that are made using liquified butane as a solvent to extract cannabinoids (THC and CBD) and terpenes from marijuana buds and trimmings. The next step removes the solvent from the concentrate by purging with heat and air pressure. The resulting mixture is then processed to produce a concentrate that looks a bit like beeswax.

Wax and budder are highly potent, with a cannabinoid concentration as high as 80%. During the purging phase, their molecules are agitated (via whipping, shaking, or stirring) to produce final products that are cloudy, creamy, and waxy. Whether the end product is called sugar wax, budder, or crumble depends on its consistency and texture.

Sugar wax weed

Sugar wax weed, a highly potent concentrated cannabis extract, has a crumbly substance similar to solidified honey.

Budder weed and crumble

People often get budder and crumble confused because of their similar consistencies. But, it’s easy to tell them apart. Crumble is dry and crumbly like cheese, while budder is moister and easier to scoop.

Live resin, caviar, and rosin

Live resin is made from flash-frozen fresh marijuana plants rather than from dried plants. It thus has a terpene profile and an aroma equivalent to freshly-picked cannabis plants. The process involves cryogenically freezing freshly-harvested plant matter before putting it through butane extraction. Freezing the living plant keeps the terpenes intact.

Caviar is a live resin concentrate that has been set aside to cure and age after flash-freezing and BHO extraction. During the aging process, cannabinoid crystals form, pushing the terpenes into a liquid called mother liquor, which is then run through the extraction process once more. Since the crystals look like tiny diamonds, caviar is sometimes called diamonds.

Rosin, on the other hand,  is made with a solventless technique that uses heat and pressure to squeeze resinous sap, almost instantaneously, from the initial plant material.
